What Are The Components Of A Solar Electric System?

A home solar electric system requires parts to generate electricity and convert power into alternative energy which can be used to run home appliances, and store the excess energy for emergencies. The various components required are as follows.

Solar Fins

Solar Panels

Solar panels are the most visible components of a residential solar electric system. The solar panels or solar fins are installed outside the home, generally on the roof. They convert sunlight into electrical power. The photovoltaic effect is defined as the process of converting sunlight into electricity, hence, gives the name PV panels as an alternative name to solar panels. Solar panels are mostly given output ratings in watts, and it is the energy produced by the panel in ideal conditions.

Solar Array Mounting Racks

Solar panels are put together into arrays and are usually mounted in either on roofs, poles in freestanding errors, or directly on the ground. The roof-mounted solar panels are the most common method, do not require much maintenance, and are efficient. Further, there are two types of arrays, fixed and tracking.

Fixed arrays are placed according to the height and angle while the tracking arrays move with the sun and are generally used for the production of solar energy on an industrial or large scale.

Array DC Disconnect

The Array DC (Direct Current) disconnect is used to disconnect the solar arrays from the house for maintenance purposes.

Inverter

An inverter’s function is to convert the DC (direct current)power generated by the solar panels and batteries to the AC (alternative Current) energy that is required by the appliances.

Battery Pack

Solar power systems generate electricity during the daytime when there is the sun. Electricity is important during the night and on cloudy days as the sun doesn’t shine then. Adding batteries to the system covers the gap between such schedules.

Power Meter, KiloWatt Meter, Utility Meter

These meters can be installed to measure the amount of power utilized from the grid and also the amount of energy sent to the network depending on the requirement.

Backup Generator

For solar energy systems that are not tied to the utility grid, a backup generator is used to provide power during periods of low system output that may be due to poor weather or high demand. The owners concerned with the environmental effects of generators can install a generator that runs on alternative fuels such as biodiesel, instead of gasoline.

Breaker Panel, Circuit Breaker Panel, AC Panel

The breaker panel is in which the power source is connected to the electrical circuits in a house.  A circuit is a continuous way of connected wire that joins outlets and lights in the electric system together. There is a circuit breaker for each circuit.

Circuit breakers prevent the appliances on the circuit from consuming too much power and causing a fire hazard or other power outbreaks. When the appliances on a circuit demand excess electricity, the circuit breaker will switch off or trip, resulting in a short circuit. Look for copper wire manufacturers in India for buying copper in bulk.

Charge Controller

The charge controller – also known as a charge regulator – maintains the proper charging voltage for system batteries. Batteries, if fed continuous voltage can be overcharged. The role of a charge controller is to regulate the voltage, prevent overcharging, and allow charging when required. However, not all solar power systems have batteries.
