How to Become CA in India – Complete Course Guide

This guide will let you briefly know all the details about the CA course and how to become CA in India. 12th std is the first milestone to be reached before entering to another phase of life, The phase of fulfilling dream, goals and need. Making the right decision at such a crucial stage of life becomes the necessity of time.
There are many professional courses available to choose after clearing 12th examination. However, the  real struggle is “How to identify what is good for me?” We suggest, you acknowledge the demand of every profession and then analyze your personal capabilities and expectation and then conclude to your choice of profession.   In this article, we will have a brief encounter with one such professional course “CA”!!!

CA is a commonly used term for Chartered Accountant, where Chartered means someone who has attained specific knowledge or certain professional knowledge from recognized institute to become eligible to serve accordingly.
An Accountant is that profession where you take care in making, maintaining and auditing financial transaction or accounts.

So when person study and clear all the necessary level prescribed By ICAI ( Institute of Chartered Accountant in India, CA governing body in India), he attains the rights or credibility or professional degree to work as CA in India
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room i.e how to become CA in India in just first attempt.

How to become CA in India?

Step- 1 Firstly you need To register yourself for C.A. foundation course.

You need to clear your 12th std in any stream(arts, science, commerce) with min 33 % of marks.

The process of registering for Foundation Course includes filling up of necessary details online on the website and obtaining a registration number, user id, and password. You have a study period for 4 months after your registration to appear for your exams.

Foundation exams are held twice a year in May and November, and for this exam, you register in December and June respectively.

You have to pay a  Foundation level total fee of Rs 11300 total which includes registration fees, examination fees, online form, fee and journal fee for member and student.

The Foundation course is valid
for 3 years, and you can have 6 attempts under your registration. Once your registration expires, you can revalidate it again with nominal fees.

There are four subjects in Foundation level related to basic accounting and auditing principles of 100 marks each, where 2 are the subjective type of paper, and the other two are objective type paper.

You are eligible for intermediate level when you clear the foundation exams with 40 % mark in each subject or 50% marks in aggregate.

Step 2 Register yourself for Intermediate Course

You can register in the intermediate course under two approach
Foundation route where you clear your foundation exams
Direct entry route where you clear your graduation and post graduation and directly enter to intermediate level, skipping the first level.

Registration for intermediate is made in the month of  March and September and exams are held in the month of November and May.

The validity for registration is for 4 years, and therefore 8 attempts can be exercised during this validation. May 2019 would be the last attempt for old IPCC course.
There should be a gap of 9 months between your registration and examination.

Intermediate Course is broadly divided into two groups. Where group 1 included 4 subjects of 100 marks, each and group2 also include 4 subjects of 100 each.

The total fees paid during the intermediate course is (15000+2000+1000+6500+2700)=27200  for both group and 23200 for a single group( registration fees are 11000 for a single group, rest all remains same )which include registration fees, student activities fees, registration for article assistant, ICITSS fees and examination fees respectively.

Students of the intermediate group have to undergo ICITSS training for 4 weeks. The training can only be done after clearing one group of both groups .after the completion of training and clearing both the group.

Step 3 Enrolling for Articleship And finals


After completion of an intermediate level, we step down to the final level. The final stage is both practical and theoretical know-how.

You undergo 3 years mandatory training Articleship during this time. There is no last date for registering the final course, but you need to register before you appear for your final exams. Final exams are held in May and November.

The validity of the Final registration is for 5 years.

The Final total fees paid is  32300 for both group (22000+3300+7000) which included registration fees, examination fees, and GMCS fees).

The final course is divided into two groups with 4 subjects in each group. all subject is for 100 marks, and you need to acquire 40 % marks in all subjects or 50% marks in aggregate.

After clearing both the groups and undergoing 3 years practical training which includes 4 weeks of AICITSS, You acquire membership of ICAI family.
